9/16/2016

To: All Secondary Agricultural Science, Environmental/Conservation CTE programs.

From: Bill Waite, Program Director, Oswegatchie Educational Center

RE: Environmental & Leadership Development Program
The Oswegatchie Educational Center is offering 33% funded Environmental and Leadership Development programs to be implemented at the center during the November 2016. Funding for these programs has been made possible by NY Ag Education and Outreach. All secondary  Agricultural Science, Environmental / Conservation CTE programs may apply for these special opportunities.  See the attached Request for Proposals for requirements and details. All proposals must be postmarked or emailed by October 15th 2016  Please do not delay your proposals.

                                                          Our 2016 Dates are:

                                           November 6—8             Sunday to Tuesday

                                           November 9 – 11           Wednesday to Friday

                                           November 16 - 18          Wednesday to Friday

Since 2000, Oswegatchie has hosted these environmental and leadership development programs at the center. We are looking forward to giving this opportunity to your students again this year. The Oswegatchie Educational Center is situated on a 1200 acre expanse of land inside the Adirondack Park. This setting provides the perfect atmosphere for learning about our natural world. The property includes 4 bodies of water, various streams, wetlands, open fields, and woodlands ideal for environmental education.

If you wish to apply, please be thorough in your understanding of the program. In short, Oswegatchie does handle all of the programming, meals, and lodging. School groups are supervised by their teacher / chaperones from 8 PM to 9 AM and in-between activities. Lodging is being held in our Sutliff and Foster Lodges.

There will more than one group on site at a time as this program serves multiple schools on the particular dates. Each school will be held to a minimum of 10 students, but can bring many more than that.

Complete the 1 page application that is in the document below. We have set a goal date of having all requests in by Oct 15th. If you need more time to commit or have any questions, contact me directly at wwaite@oswegatchie.org or call (315)346-1222.

This a wonderful time to attend Oswegatchie. Weather can be fickle during this time of year, so groups will want to bring clothing for warm and cold conditions. Don’t miss out on this opportunity for you and your students. Apply today!

2017 Winter Survival Camp for Military Youth

7/25/2016

During the week of February 19 -24th, New York’s FFA Camp Oswegatchie will host a week long outdoor sports & winter survival camp. While it is titled a Winter Survival Camp, we will be using our modern / winterized lodge for meals and lodging. Everything else is outside on our 1,200 acres of wilderness land in the Adirondacks. Besides basic physical abilities, it requires no special skill sets, but it does require winter clothes.

This camp is open to any youth ages 14 – 18, as long as they are the child of an active duty, reservist, or veteran military personnel.

This is a grant program being implemented through the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County and is highly grant funded. The cost per student is only $40, but the value of the week is $500, plus there is a $325 travel stipend. It’s an incredible value.

2016 AdironDUCk Race Report Card

Picture
The 22nd Annual AdironDuck Race was held on April 24th, 2016. We are thankful for the schools that participated. We had 130 volunteers and  1,600 guests that spent the day at Oswegatchie.

7,036 total ducks were sold. 319 more than last year!

Interestingly, 16 FFA Chapters participated in the actual selling of ducks, but due to our on-line sales system, a total 44 chapters received duck credit.

$13,727 will be given to back to chapter as credit to participate in Oswegatchie activities.

The top 5 sellers were:
Beaver River- 988
Lowville- 665
South Lewis- 542
Carthage- 530
Sidney- 393

The Adironduck Race is important for a handful of reasons:
  •  Oswegatchie gets cleaned up and ready for another year.
  • Funds are raised to help send kids to camp
  • Funds are raised to help keep summer camp costs low.
  • Past FFA members and campers get a chance to visit Oswegatchie
  • The community from near and far get to have a free day of entertainment outside in the sun
  • People are drawn into Lewis County and helps showcase our local area.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this event a success. From duck buyers to pancake flippers, it made for another successful day.

Sincerely,
Robin Waite
