The Oswegatchie Blueway Trail is now mapped out as “a guide to the outdoor recreation and waterfront communities along the Oswegatchie River in New York’s North Country communities”. Covering territories from Ogdensburg to Cranberry Lake, you can find information regarding camping, waterfalls, stores, visitor centers, and listings for anything you would need. The 40 page promotional booklet can be viewed or downloaded below. The link to the City of Ogdensburg website is also available.
Does it cover the Oswegatchie Educational Center? Technically yes, in Map #3 in the Guidebook, the West Branch of the Oswegatchie is listed and its shows symbols for primitive campsites just down the road from our location. However, if individuals do find this post, we encourage them to look at what we offer for lodging for larger groups online at www.oswegatcheretreats.org.
Lewis County, New York does have resources to support people traveling through the Oswegatchie region. While on your way to Saint Lawrence County, we recommend you stop for some Croghan Bologna or many of our other local specialties that make outdoor adventures even better.
I will add this little piece; the Oswegatchie River from Long Pond to Harrisville is not technically a great river for travelling. There are pieces that have relaxed paddles, scenic waterfalls, large ponds, and wildlife viewing. However, paddling for distance is not why you would paddle on the West Branch of the Oswegatchie. Quality stretches for canoes or kayaks do exist. However, be prepared to portage or bring a sturdy boat that can take the bumps of our western slice of the Adirondacks.
