Thank for Your Mega Duck Dash Support!

10/28/2020

Let’s begin with Thank You!

Oswegatchie is incredibly thankful to the supporters of the Mega Duck Dash. Our “camp community” continues to be an amazing group of people that impresses us at every turn.

If you purchased Mega Duck Tickets, you are helping us get through the most difficult stretch we have had in 20 years. With the addition of the new dining hall, we are positioned to zoom forward when “Covid” is over.

If you volunteered on the Mega Duck Dash weekend, you helped us leverage our time to make the most of the rest of 2020. The next 2 months will be crucial for us to be prepared for 2021.

We raced 935 Mega Ducks which is the smallest amount of ducks we have raced in 25 years. With a new event, we had no idea if it would succeed or not. We are overjoyed with the success.

We raised $40,000, which is roughly what we raise from an average Duck Race year. Our only major expense for the event was the grand prize, and this was paid for with the first 100 ducks sold.
We had one grateful winner! Congratulations to Stephanie Rhoades for her win! If you do not know Stephanie, she is a FFA advisor and agricultural educator in Pine Plains, NY. She was a NYS FFA member, past state officer, camp staff, and is still involved.

2020 is demonstrating the strength of the Oswegatchie community. With every special event, camp store sale, or small group that rents an empty lodge, we see that strength every day.

Once again, Thank You for your Support!

Excelsior,

The Oswegatchie Staff

Paddle to the Adironduck Race

3/31/2017

If you have never heard of the AdironDUCK Race in Croghan, stop reading this and go to this link!

www.adironduckrace.com

The short story is that the Oswegatchie Educational Center will race as many as 10,000 rubber ducks down our small river section. The last Sunday in April is filled with a pancake breakfast, an Adirondack storyteller, vendors, etc! When the sun is shining, the duck race draws in roughly 2,000 people for the day. Just about everybody gets to Oswegatchie by car, but we do have a few motorcycles, bikes, ATVs, and occasionally a seaplane.

So why do I propose you “Paddle” to the Adironduck Race? Its seems like a bit odd of a proposition...  I have become acquainted with some local paddling groups and I thought to myself how sweet it would be to arrive to the duck race ala canoe or kayak! So here I write this piece to entice you into a little adventure.
Picture
Pack up your canoe, kayak, or guide boat and travel to Croghan, I will leave those directions up to you. Once you get to Croghan, head north on 812 and turn onto Belfort Road. Follow that for 4 miles to the City of the Future known as Belfort. Once there, turn right at the Belfort Inn onto Long Pond Road and drive roughly 3 miles till you get to Prentice Road on the right. Now things get interesting.
Picture
You will need to travel about 5 miles down this back road till you find a sign that says “Long Pond Cooperator Area”. Just 100 yards past that down the hill will be the turn into the south end of Long Pond. This secluded beach is the perfect place to launch a small craft onto a scenic pond early in the morning. With only one cabin on the south end of Long Pond, it’s a spectacular place for quiet water paddling. If you go straight north up the pond, you will find the Oswegatchie Camp! It will be impossible to miss. From the south end to the north end, its only 1.5 miles and has plenty of open water for side trips.
Picture
If you do make it to Long Pond to paddle into our event, please leave space for others to pull in. You will find the "turn around" at the south end there is plenty of space.

Lastly, GPS is unreliable as you approach our site, we recommend not using it, but following our directions.

In advance, we thank you for your patronage and visit to Oswegatchie. We hope you will find the Adironduck Race to be as much fun as we do!

Excelsior,
Bill Waite

2016 AdironDUCk Race Report Card

The 22nd Annual AdironDuck Race was held on April 24th, 2016. We are thankful for the schools that participated. We had 130 volunteers and  1,600 guests that spent the day at Oswegatchie.

7,036 total ducks were sold. 319 more than last year!

Interestingly, 16 FFA Chapters participated in the actual selling of ducks, but due to our on-line sales system, a total 44 chapters received duck credit.

$13,727 will be given to back to chapter as credit to participate in Oswegatchie activities.

The top 5 sellers were:
Beaver River- 988
Lowville- 665
South Lewis- 542
Carthage- 530
Sidney- 393

The Adironduck Race is important for a handful of reasons:
  •  Oswegatchie gets cleaned up and ready for another year.
  • Funds are raised to help send kids to camp
  • Funds are raised to help keep summer camp costs low.
  • Past FFA members and campers get a chance to visit Oswegatchie
  • The community from near and far get to have a free day of entertainment outside in the sun
  • People are drawn into Lewis County and helps showcase our local area.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this event a success. From duck buyers to pancake flippers, it made for another successful day.

Sincerely,
Robin Waite

Tutorial Videos for FFA Advisors

2/25/2016

Its hard to realize how complicated all the pieces of being an FFA Advisor / Ag Educator are to perform. I have made 2 tutorials videos for teachers to help them understand 2 big pieces of Oswegatchie’s yearly operation.

This is an effort to make things less complicated. Technically, these videos are for newer teachers, but veterans may find them useful as well.

As a side note, if you are not a FFA Advisor, but work in schools or other youth groups, we typically have space for more than FFA members to be at camp. Contact us at info@oswegatchie.org .
