Why the adironduck Race is important?

Its about 4 days since we hosted our annual fundraiser for summer camp. April 26th, 2015 had 1,800 guests and 125 volunteers working to create a unique opportunity for anyone who wanted to be here.

The AdironDUCK Race is typically the last Sunday in April and has been going on for 21 years. We raise a good sum of money that all goes to keep the costs of summer camp low for everyone! This has been a major part of the event's mission since the beginning.

But "The Why?" do we have the AdironDuck Race is bigger than the fundraising.

Its about summer camp and Oswegatchie. Its about seeing old friends and your neighbors. Its about pancakes with real maple syrup. Its about stopping in town and having some ice cream and checking out the railroad museum. Its about adirondack storytellers and an amazing circus performer. Its about church on Sunday morning in Getman Lodge. Its about sunshine on your face and the laughing of your kids.

At the end of the day, its about a whole lot more than anyone place or anyone person!

On behalf of the Oswegatchie Educational Center, I am pleased to introduce our newest full time staff member. Veronique Krohn will be joining the Oswegatchie team as a Program Specialist with a focus on our TEAM Challenge program upon graduating this May from Morrisville State College, with a BT degree in Agricultural Business.

Veronique has worked at Oswegatchie for the past three summers as a counselor and most recently as our director of the Equine program.   In addition to providing oversight for our TEAM Challenge program, Veronique will continue to provide oversight and direction of our summer equine program.  In the off season she will be responsible for marketing our TEAM Challenge program, providing support for maintenance, overseeing our maple program, among other tasks.

Her career aspiration is to one day attain a position as an agricultural teacher.  To that end Veronique is looking forward to the opportunity to work with many of our teachers over the summer and during their yearly visits to Oswegatchie.

AdironDuck Race in Croghan - Sunday, April 26th, 2015

On Sunday April 26th, 2015 the Oswegatchie Educational Center, Long Pond Rd., Croghan, NY will hold the 21st Annual AdironDuck Race and Pancake Breakfast.  An all you can eat pancake breakfast will be served from 8 AM to 12:00 PM.

We have 2 excellent entertainers this year. The Troy Wunderle One Man Circus performs at 10 AM in our pavilion. At 11:00 AM, you can enjoy Adirondack Storyteller Bill Smith.  Oswegatchie will also have other venues for entertainment on the property, plus the Adirondack Artisan’s Guild will be on exhibit. An ecumenical church service is also available at 9:30 in Getman Lodge.

The day will be highlighted by the dumping of as many as 10,000 rubber ducks into the chilly waters of the Oswegatchie River.  The adopters of the first 10 ducks to cross the gates will receive cash prizes including a $2,000 grand prize. Ducks may be adopted the day of the race, but supply is limited to 10,000!

An exciting Tidbit, when you purchase ducks online at www.adironduckrace.com, you can credit any New York FFA Chapter with the sale of those ducks. In return, that FFA chapter gets 50% of the money back to them in the form of duck bucks, which they can use for any program or summer campership at Oswegatchie! It’s the best way for FFA members to invest their time in helping themselves!

The Oswegatchie Educational Center is owned and operated by the New York State FFA Foundation, Inc. which is a 501 (c) 3 not for profit organization.  The mission of the Oswegatchie Educational Center is to provide all persons with the opportunity to foster leadership development, environmental education, and outdoor recreation in a quality experiential learning atmosphere.  Oswegatchie is open to all groups, organizations, and individuals.  Affiliation in the FFA is not required.

All proceeds from this event benefit the Oswegatchie Summer Program Fund which provides youth scholarships and funds for improvements to the summer program.  If you cannot attend but wish to adopt a duck, you can do so by visiting our website at www.adironduckrace.com . For any other information, call (315) 346-1222.  Come out for a day of family fun & entertainment as we welcome Spring with a splash!
