Oswegatchie is a Snowshoe Paradise!
|
Oswegatchie can accommodate 50+ participants on a snowshoe adventure. We can offer physically challenging hikes or easygoing trips. We have eight different sizes of shoes, so adults and children can all have a great experience. The only thing we do not control is the depth of snow! Intended for Grades K-12, the program adjusts to students' skills and abilities. Oswegatchie uses primarily Atlas Snowshoes.
The bit of wisdom we can share in advance of a trip is that you're not really snowshoeing till you lose your breath and break a sweat. Snowshoeing is an athletic endeavor, but once you warm up, you will be just fine. (There is no better way to tire out students than snowshoes.) Proper winter clothes are an essential part of a group's preparedness for a day outside. Bringing a water bottle is recommended. |
We will climb tall hills and slide down the slopes. Groups will discover animal tracks and signs. Returning to our origin will take us along the pond's edge and under the trees. Teachers & chaperones are expected to snowshoe to manage the students.
A basic snowshoe experience lasts about 2 - 3 hours, which includes getting snowshoes on, warm-ups, a trek, rests on the trail, and returning to the starting point. We can typically handle 50 people per trip, but we can make arrangements for larger groups. This is physically challenging, especially at the start of each trip. We stop frequently and offer many times for rest.
This adventure is often enriched by winter ecology as we find tracks, homes, and evidence of animals in the forest. Any time we take a trip out, what we find is different. The winter snows paint a different picture for each trip.
Oswegatchie also has cross-country Skis!
We have a fleet of cross-country skis that can get 20 people outside and skiing. We groom our athletic field in order to safely train before heading into the woods.
